Your Weekly Tarotcast™: Nine of Swords

Weekly Tarotcast™: 12-02-14 through 12-09-14

 Nine of Swords

The weekly Tarotcast card is the Nine of Swords. Not the happiest card in the deck, that’s for sure – very few cards in the suit of Swords are embraced with open arms when they show up in a reading. It’s hard to find the positive benefits here, but they do exist – we have to be willing and able to look for them, and overcome the tendency toward downright stupidity and meanness that this card embodies.

On the kabalistic Tree of Life, this card represents the formula 9:  sephiroth or sphere 9, Yesod (meaning Foundation, and the sphere of the Moon) in the suit of Swords (the element of Air – our mind, intellect, thoughts and mental processes) plus Mars in Gemini (more on that in a moment) equaling “Cruelty”.

Astrologically this card corresponds to Mars in Gemini and rules from 10 to 20 degrees Gemini, or June 1st to June 10th, so if your birthday falls on or between those dates, you’ll be feeling this week’s energy even more than the rest of us.  The challenge here is created by all-action Mars in all-talk Gemini in the realm of the mind. This is torture that doesn’t even provide sadistic pleasure to the torturer. Ugh.

Unlike the nines of the other suits, this card is really unpleasant – plain old ugly and mean, but don’t despair even if you’re feeling a little queasy. On a higher level, this card shows us that we can use fear to guide us on our path to maturity and sometimes we must be cruel to be kind. Like a surgeon cutting out diseased tissue, the pain and risk for the patient is frequently worth the end result.

In real-time astrology, Mars enters Gemini’s fellow Air-sign, Aquarius on December 4th and on December 6th, we have a Gemini Full Moon. With Mars in Aquarius, freedom is a high priority – this may be helpful energy to counteract the darkly obsessed energies of this week’s card. The Gemini Full Moon enhances communication – but make sure what you’re communicating is not the nasty, judgmental stuff that this week’s card may stir up.  Let’s be guided “by the better angels of our nature.”

Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card includes feelings of shame, guilt, terror, misery and hate – and these can be turned inward on ourselves or outward onto an unsuspecting (and maybe undeserving) world.

Let’s focus on using our consciences – and our consciousness – to surgically remove the source of our “dis-ease” – setting ourselves free from self-torment and refraining from the torture or aggressive destruction of others.

A little home alchemy:  Power colors this week include dark purple, scarlet red, azure blue and emerald for Mars and orange or mauve for Gemini.  Normally combinations of colors are a good idea – this week we want to choose either the lightness of Gemini or the strength of Mars – but not to reinforce them in combination.

Diamond, jade, agate and topaz for Gemini, or ruby, bloodstone and garnet for Mars worn as jewelry or carried as power stones will help us resist cruelty, stupidity and mean-spiritedness this week.

Mercury and iron are this week’s metals – neither is great for wearing, but mercury reminds us to be adaptable and go with the flow while iron is a good reminder of strength and endurance.

Scent your home, bath and body with hazel, fern, iris, wild rose, allspice, pine, and tobacco (the scent, you don’t need to smoke it!) to enhance your positive thought processes and mental clarity.

Foods prepared with parsley, dill, thistle (think artichokes!) allspice, cayenne, garlic, ginger and pepper will provide the same beneficial effects.
