Weekly Tarotcast™: 9-08-15 through 9-15-15
Five of Disks
The weekly Tarotcast card is the Five of Disks. This suit is also called Pentacles or Coins. This card symbolizes anxiety over money or other material resources.
All manner of unpleasant “what ifs” and worst-case-scenarios stubbornly clutter up our thinking.
On the kabalistic Tree of Life, this card represents the formula 5: sephiroth or sphere 5, Geburah (meaning Strength, sphere of Mars and storms, stress and motion), of Disks (Assiah, the element of Earth – the material world, our physical bodies, assets and resources) plus Mercury in Taurus (more on that in a moment) equaling Worry.
The Fives of the Major Arcana challenge the order and structure of their respective elements that were previously created by the energy of the fours. Often viewed as negatively disruptive, they are more accurately the place where their suit and element get shaken out of complacency, stagnation or stasis. They bring cleansing, regeneration, strife or reassessment in events and situations. The fives affirm the equation “change equals stability” and keep energy flowing, or the solidification and stability of the fours would degenerate into inertia.
Astrologically, this card represents Mercury in Taurus and rules from 0 to 10 degrees Taurus, or April 21st to April 30th, so if your birthday falls on or between those dates, you’ll be feeling this week’s energy even more than the rest of us. Mercury in Taurus can be patient, practical and conservative. However, the wrench in the works here is Martial energy – disturbing, disruptive and eager for action – working the monkey-mind up into a lather of worry.
In real-time astrology, we will have a New Moon, partial solar eclipse in Taurus’ fellow-earth sign, Virgo on September 13th. Mercury will retrograde in Libra starting September 17th. Venus, co-ruler of both Taurus and Libra turned direct on September 6th. Some of our mental restlessness and our worries can alternate between lack or loss of money and other valuable resources to the state of our interpersonal relationships (romantic and platonic).
Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card includes harsh judgment, fear and inflexibility in the face of change, negative obsession over imagined loss or poverty and obstinacy.
Let’s focus on careful thought and action, working smart rather than hard, and even exercising some guarded optimism this week.
A little home alchemy: Power colors this week include red, orange, indigo, olive and warm brown (for Taurus) as well as yellow, purple and gray (for Mercury).
Sapphire, diamond, emerald, turquoise, jade, jasper and topaz worn as jewelry or carried as power stones will help us stay positive while welcoming change – sometimes a temporary loss leads to greater gain. And sometimes the things we worry about the most never actually happen.
Mercury (of course!), zinc and copper are this week’s metals. Only copper is wearable, but mercury’s fluidity and sensitivity; as well as zinc’s strengthening properties (as an alloy) and health benefits (as an essential mineral in the human body) are good reminders of the benefits each can have for us.
Scent your home, bath and body with violet, rose, rosemary, valerian, lavender, lilac, and vervain to quiet your mind and calm your thoughts this week.
Foods prepared with parsley, dill, rosemary, lavender, mace, lemongrass and peppermint as well as tea brewed from peppermint or valerian will provide the same beneficial effects.
