Five of Swords: Weekly Tarotcast™ – Free Tarot Reading
8-03-21 through 8-10-21
The Five of Swords is this week’s Tarotcast card. Conflicts this week may result in a dubious or empty victory. We self-sabotage and defeat ourselves in ways our adversaries could never do. There are no clear resolutions to confrontations. This card can also show a narrow escape from danger or the lifting of restrictions. This is not a good week for the sensitive, the pacifist, the mellow, and the easy-going. You may feel that you’ve shown up at a street fight instead of a tea-party. And you may feel ill-equipped to deal with the situation.
The intellect and abstract rationality of Air disrupts. It defeats the gentle and peace-loving. Failure and decay result.
The Number 5
The Fives of the Minor Arcana challenge order and structure. Their suit and element get shaken out of complacency, stagnation or stasis. They bring a period of cleansing, regeneration, or reassessment in events and relationships. The number 5 keeps energy flowing. Otherwise, the solidification and stability created by the fours would degenerate into inertia.
On the Tree of Life, the Five of Swords represents the Formula 5. Sephiroth or sphere 5, Geburah (Strength). The sphere of Mars – action, motion, stress and war. In the suit of Swords – Yetzirah, the formative world. The element of Air; our mental and intellectual processes. Plus, Venus in Aquarius equaling Defeat.
The Five of Swords corresponds to Venus in Aquarius. It rules from 0 to 10 degrees Aquarius, or January 20th to January 29th. So, if your birthday falls on or between these dates, you’ll be feeling this week’s energy even more than the rest of us. Venus’s energy is peaceful, collaborative and diplomatic. It’s a poor match to the aggressive and adversarial energies of Mars. And it’s worse still combined with the Swords’ tendency toward discord and disruption.
In real-time astrology, the Sun continues its transit of Fire sign Leo. Mercury is also transiting Leo. Leo is Aquarius’ polar opposite sign. Combined with the energy of this week’s card there are both pitfalls and benefits here. Big Intellect Aquarius and Big Heart Leo can make for a strong, rebellious champion. But they can also devolve into an egotistical, cold oppressor. This week that can be a tough call.
“It’s no surprise to me – I am my own worst enemy – ’cause every now and then I kick the living shit out of me…”
Jupiter is still retrograde in Aquarius. Open-minded and fair, we may act on behalf of others. But we may also waste energy and resources fighting a battle that we can’t win. Or win a victory that changes nothing.
“I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch – love is not a victory march, it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah…”
Mars and Venus are transiting Earth-sign Virgo. This energy can help us clean house either in a literal or metaphoric way. Tend to details, organize, and get into healthy routines. Get practical and active.
On August 8th we have a New Moon in Leo. This is great energy for building confidence. Take a healthy interest in yourself. Find ways to express your creativity. Be generous. The Sun and Moon will square Uranus (Aquarius’ ruling planet). Avoid acts of senseless rebellion or rash actions.
Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of the Five of Swords includes engaging in deceit. Causing intentional harm. Betrayal, disgrace.
Let’s focus on drawing insight from our own and others’ motives. Do your best to take right action whenever and wherever possible. This is especially important when dealing with our own self-defeating and self-sabotaging tendencies.
Power colors: scarlet, emerald green, sky blue, spring green and bright rose pink. Also violet, white and mauve.
Power stones: zircon, amber, malachite, emerald, opal, jade and sapphire. Wear these as jewelry or carry them as power stones. They will help us steer clear of no-win situations. They enable us to look deep within ourselves for constructive solutions.
Power metals: Venus copper and Aquarius uranium. Only copper is good for wearing. Uranium is a helpful reminder that power can create great good or great harm.
Power fragrances: pine, violet, rose, bergamot, hibiscus, magnolia, plumeria and vervain. These will help you to avoid senseless conflict and stressful confrontations. Avoid the tendency to make peace “at any price” this week.
Power foods: foods prepared with apples, strawberries and vanilla. Tea brewed from hibiscus. All provide the same beneficial effects already described.
