Your Weekly Tarotcast™: Ten of Wands

Weekly Tarotcast™: 7-31-18 through 8-07-18

Ten of Wands

The weekly Tarotcast card is the Ten of Wands. This week’s energy is a warning against many things – all of which represent the ways in which we imprison ourselves in cages of our own design. This can include anything from workaholism to taking on burdens that aren’t ours to bear. Personal responsibility is important, but so are boundaries. Taking on the responsibilities that rightly belong to others can lead to feelings of resentment because we’re playing the martyr.

On the kabalistic Tree of Life, this card represents the formula 10: sephiroth or sphere 10, Malkuth (meaning Kingdom – sphere of Earth and the full materialization of energy) in the suit of Wands (the element of Fire – Atziluth, the archetypal world; our Will in action) plus Saturn in Sagittarius (more on that in a moment) equaling Oppression.

Frankly, this is not the most pleasant energy around. Since all of the tens of the Minor Arcana cards are in the sephiroth of Malkuth on the tree of life, this lowest sephiroth represents the material world, and is the position in which all the elements (in this case Fire) expend their energy in its grossest, and often most destructive form.

Here is what Crowley writes of this card: “This is what happens when one uses force, force, and nothing else but force all the time. Here looms the dull and heavy planet Saturn weighing down the fiery, ethereal side of Sagittarius; it brings out all the worst in Sagittarius. See the Archer, not shooting forth benign rays, but dealing the sharp rain of death! The Wand has conquered; it has done its work; it has done its work too well; it did not know when to stop; Government has become Tyranny.”

Astrologically this card represents Saturn in Sagittarius, and rules from 20 to 30 degrees Sagittarius, or December 13th to December 21st so if your birthday falls on or between these dates, you’ll be feeling this week’s energy even more than the rest of us. Sagittarius is the most ethereal of the fire signs – Saturn’s oppressive, repressive, heavy iron boots can be freedom-loving Sagittarius’ worst nightmare realized.

In real-time astrology, the Sun is transiting Sagittarius’ fellow Fire-sign Leo (through August 23rd). Mercury is retrograde in Leo (through August 19th). This heavily-charged energy can create some serious challenges during this forecast period. Leo’s force of will and sometimes aggressive communication style can meet with hard resistance and create conflict. This is only multiplied and intensified in combination with the Mercury retrograde energy which tends to mess up communication.

When Venus enters Air-sign Libra on August 6th we’re more likely to try charm rather than aggression to get what we want. Since we’re likely to be repelled by aggressive or rude behavior we may be somewhat cool and detached when dealing with others – and under the influences of this week’s card, that might not be a bad thing.

Both Mars and Saturn are retrograde in Saturn-ruled Capricorn. While Saturn’s energies are most at home in methodical, practical and ambitious but slow-moving Capricorn, Mars energy is straining at the seams and chomping at the bit to move quickly and aggressively.
Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card abounds – fixation, obsession, repression and oppression are rife. So are inflexible attitudes and beliefs and the idea of a punishing, vengeful God. If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Check your toolbox carefully this week.

Let’s focus on what positives are available, mainly the strength to persevere and the use of slow, structured growth to push past our internal obstacles.

A little home alchemy: Power colors this week include yellow, indigo, black, blue and green.

Sapphire, emerald and topaz enhance the light, mobile energy of Sagittarius while obsidian, garnet, onyx and jet represent Saturn’s grounding force. This week wearing either (but not in combination) as jewelry or carried as power stones will keep us moving forward slowly but surely and keep our boundaries securely in place.

Tin and lead are this week’s metals. Neither is good for wearing, but can be good reminders of the strength to be found when we combine our efforts in positive alliances.

Scent your home, bath and body with carnation, sage, valerian, comfrey, musk, patchouli, slippery elm, thyme, and witch hazel to enhance any of the positives available this week.

Foods prepared with thyme and sage, or teas brewed from valerian or comfrey will provide the same beneficial effects.

Your Weekly Tarotcast™: The Hermit

Weekly Tarotcast™: 7-24-18 through 7-31-18

The Hermit

The weekly Tarotcast card is the Hermit. This card shows us that taking a (temporarily) solitary path will aid us in our search for truth. Solitude and being alone don’t have to mean feeling lonely, so we may find that we actively seek and very much enjoy our own company this week. Probing our own inner consciousness and exploring our psyches will not only appeal to us, the insights we gain and the discoveries we make can bring us solutions to long-standing problems or issues, and give us the seeds to sow for a crop of new ideas and fresh directions.

We may find ourselves withdrawing from current events and taking a less-active role in our relationships and environments, not due to depression or disinterest, but because the energy this week calls us to look within. Reflection and introspection are our best tools to emerging refreshed, renewed and ready for action again.

On the kabalistic Tree of Life this card travels path 20, joining sephiroth or sphere 4, Chesed (meaning Mercy – sphere of Jupiter and the rule of law) to sephiroth or sphere 6, Tiphareth (meaning Beauty – sphere of the Sun; energy in complete and balanced manifestation). Its Hebrew letter is Yod, meaning the hand, and it is with our hands that we sow seeds – which are hidden in the ground during the crucial stages of their ultimate development and growth. It is also with our hands that we cultivate our gardens – and ultimately harvest their bounty.

Astrologically, this card is the zodiacal trump of Virgo, in which Mercury both rules and is exalted. The unique way in which Mercury, the Earth and Sun come together in this card symbolizes the special magic of growing things. The seed placed into the soil, hidden from view, undergoes a transformation and bursts forth into the sunlight to be further nurtured and grow to maturity. Here particularly, Mercury (Hermes to the Greeks) shows us his versatility beyond being a messenger and trickster. His roles include acting as a guide for the dead crossing over, an interpreter, a transformer and the patron of geographical (and metaphorical) boundaries and the travelers who navigate them.

In real-time astrology, the Sun is transiting Fire sign Leo, Virgo’s next-door neighbor.

Mercury turns retrograde on July 26th in Leo (through August 19th) and will not leave that sign through this transit. All of the usual warnings apply during this forecast period – take extra care in all forms of communication, allow extra time when traveling, expect some delays, obstacles, postponements or cancellations. With both Mercury and Mars retrograde now, forward progress may be minimal – things will be moving slowly.

A Full Moon Lunar eclipse occurs on July 27th in Air sign Aquarius (Leo’s polar opposite on the wheel of the zodiac). During this forecast period we are very sensitive to the flaws and shortcomings of those areas of our lives where we interact with others: personal relationships, work colleagues and members of our community. While we’re very aware of our need for human connection and interaction we may have a hard time acting objectively and rationally. Decisions made at this time are driven by our emotions. Combined with the energy of this week’s card, the challenge will be balancing our personal goals with the needs of the community and groups that we belong to.

Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card includes rigidity, hard attitudes, bitterness and hostility toward the outside world – even narcissism.

Let’s focus on the qualities of emotional maturity, wisdom and enlightenment this week.

A little home alchemy: Power colors this week are yellowish green, slate grey, grey-green and plum.

This is a great week to listen to Revolution 9 from the Beatles’ White Album, Beethoven’s Ninth symphony or Gregorian chants, since this Major Arcana card is numbered 9 – the number which always comes back to itself.

Onyx and clear crystal as well as diamonds worn as jewelry or carried as power stones will make your alone-time or me-time as productive, meaningful and informative as possible.

This week’s metals are gold and platinum – pricey I know, but wear ‘em if you’ve got ‘em, because they beautifully symbolize the light that is born from darkness.

Scent your home, bath and body with lily, valerian, lavender, lilac, and frankincense to awaken the introspective and transformative powers of the Hermit.

Foods prepared with parsley, dill, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass and mace, or tea brewed from peppermint; as well as beverages containing juniper (gin!) and wormwood (absinthe!) – in moderation, please – will provide the same beneficial effects.

Weekly Tarotcast™: Ace of Cups

Weekly Tarotcast™: 7-17-18 through 7-24-18

Ace of Cups

The weekly Tarotcast card is the Ace of Cups. The aces are the source or seed of their element’s energy, so the intrinsic powers of the element of Water are embodied in this card. Fluidity, receptivity, Yin (Female) energy and water’s power to reflect are all contained in the Ace of Cups. The water element also symbolizes our emotions – and more accurately with the Ace, our potential to feel and express a range of emotions.

All of the Aces of the Tarot can be a bit confusing, especially since they actually have a closer bond with the Princesses (Pages) of each suit than they do with cards 2 through 10 of their respective suits. This card has the Princess of Cups as its throne, and together with her rules the Libra-Scorpio-Sagittarius celestial quadrant above the North Pole and the area of the Pacific Rim. Whew!

This card represents the possibilities of desire for harmonious union, love and affection, and the mystery of romantic attraction, although all types of love can come into our lives this week.

We are ready to go to the core of our hearts and souls, and we are open and receptive to the deepest feelings of others too. A sense of newness – birth or rebirth – is connected to this card. All things “new” will have a strong appeal – a new love, a new start, a new-found appreciation for life, new (or renewed) emotional connections.

On the kabalistic Tree of Life this card represents the 1st sephiroth or sphere of Kether (the Crown, origin) through the element of Water – Briah; the Creative world and the divine soul, intuition.

Astrologically, for interpretive purposes, this card incorporates the energy, qualities and characteristics of the three water signs – sensitivity (Cancer), desire (Scorpio) and mysticism (Pisces).

In real-time astrology, the Sun continues its transit of Water-sign Cancer (until July 22nd). Cancer is a Cardinal sign – the leaders and originators of their astrological elements. Cardinal signs want to initiate plans and take action. The best use of this energy in this forecast period is to manifest what we most love and value. Sow the seeds of new projects nearest and dearest to your heart’s desire, but remember that the Mars retrograde may keep you working on the planning stages for the rest of this month and most of August. Nurture and care for what you hope to grow and harvest later this year.

As the Sun moves into Fire-sign Leo on July 22nd, we finish this forecast period with heart-felt appreciation and a sunburst of creativity.

Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card includes vague thinking, irrational indulgence of the emotions, and creating emotional “tsunamis” that can overwhelm or threaten to drown others (or ourselves).

Let’s focus on inviting and welcoming the healing qualities of water into our lives this week.

A little home alchemy: The true color of the Ace of Cups is pure white brilliance. Power colors this week also include grey, indigo, aquamarine, turquoise and all the various colors of water.

Aquamarine, beryl, opal, amethyst, blue tourmaline, pearl, coral, blue topaz, blue fluorite, larimar, lapis lazuli and sodalite worn as jewelry or carried as power stones will help us channel the cleansing and liberating powers of water.

Mercury and copper as well as white metals (such as silver, white gold and platinum) are all reminders of water’s power of reflection, refraction and brilliance.

Scent your home, bath and body with aloe, gardenia, lilac, lily of the valley, lotus, mosses, passion flower, rose – water lilies and all water plants will help us connect with our innermost emotions in a calm, peaceful and powerful way this week.

Foods prepared with apple, lemon, lettuce, lotus root, thyme and seaweed as well as teas brewed from chamomile or rose hips will provide the same beneficial effects.

Your Weekly Tarotcast™: Seven of Wands

Weekly Tarotcast™: 7-10-18 through 7-17-18

Seven of Wands

The weekly Tarotcast card is the Seven of Wands. This card warns us that we may be wasting our energy this week. For certain, there is a struggle going on – feelings of bravery and assertiveness against feelings of degeneration and weakness. There are challenges and obstacles galore and we may feel as if no one has our back – our struggle is essentially ours alone, and there may not be much help or support. If we do achieve a victory, it’s likely to come solely through our own efforts.

The Sevens of the Minor Arcana illuminate the motives for manifestation of their respective suits and elements. Balance gives way to questioning and exploration as well as the disruption which naturally arises from the search for the underlying causes of creative action. The sevens dissolve and deconstruct.

On the kabalistic Tree of Life this card represents the formula 7: sephiroth or sphere 7, Netzach (meaning Victory, sphere of Venus – illusion, imbalance, weakness) in the suit of Wands (Atziluth, the archetypal world; the element of Fire – the will) plus Mars in Leo (more on that in a moment) equaling Valour.

Astrologically, this card represents Mars in Leo, and rules from 20 to 30 degrees Leo, or August 12th through August 22nd so if your birthday falls on or between these dates, you’ll be feeling this week’s energy even more than the rest of us. Mars in Leo is ambitious and idealistic, with the ability to persevere. Although valour is another word for courage, in this instance it may come across as vain bravado, false machismo, or senseless resistance.

In real-time astrology, the Sun is transiting Water-sign Cancer, Leo’s next-door neighbor sign (until July 22nd). Just following this forecast period, the Sun will begin its annual transit of Fire-sign Leo. Mars continues its retrograde transit of Leo’s polar-opposite sign of Aquarius through the month of July. Especially in conjunction with the energy of this week’s card, we are impatient to resolve an ongoing problem or bring a project to conclusion. We can feel stuck and frustrated because things are just not moving forward. The past refuses to stay behind us.

Mercury transits Leo through the month of July (through September 5th). We’re likely to focus more on the big picture and less on the details. When Mercury retrogrades in Leo following this forecast period (July 26th to August 19th) we may revisit old recreational or creative pursuits with renewed interest and enthusiasm. Our perspective on past projects can change and we may even consider revamping them based on our new viewpoint. Mercury starts its shadow phase on July 7th so events occurring on and after this date may be the first to need review or revision during the retrograde period.

We have a New Moon partial Solar Eclipse in Cancer on July 12th. This lunation is a great chance for a fresh start. We’ll be exploring and attending to our feelings as well as our deepest needs and desires. We find deeper appreciation for our family and closest friends – especially for the sense of community, belonging, safety and security we find in our relationships with them. Our need and desire for intimacy is strong during this moon phase. This energy can be a great complement to the energy of this week’s card – urging us to reach out for support as we begin a new stage of our journey.

Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card includes indecisiveness, blind ignorance, swaggering arrogance with nothing to back it up, and a mismatch between our assertiveness and our plain old good sense. If there was ever a week to choose your battles wisely, this would be the one.

Let’s focus on conserving our energy and using it positively, as well as realizing that sometimes the most courageous thing we can do is forgo a battle – just skip it.

A little home alchemy: Power colors for this week include amber, all shades of red, yellow and deep purple.

Mars iron and Leo gold are this week’s metals. Wear the Leo (yellow or rose) gold to remind you of Leo’s big-hearted courage, but skip the Lion’s arrogance and vanity.

Ruby, bloodstone, garnet, amber and diamond worn as jewelry or carried as power stones will help balance out the tendency to be hot-headed or combative this week.

Scent your home, bath and body with marigold, sunflower, wild rose, pine, and tobacco (no, you don’t need to smoke it!) this week to stay focused on winnable battles, and to make good use of your energy and time.

Foods prepared with allspice, cayenne, garlic, ginger and pepper, as well as thistle (think artichokes!) along with beverages made from hops (beer), or wormwood (the Green Fairy – absinthe) – all in moderation, of course – will provide the same beneficial effects.

Your Weekly Tarotcast™: Four of Swords

Weekly Tarotcast™: 7-03-18 through 7-10-18

Four of Swords

The weekly Tarotcast card is the Four of Swords. Authority exercised with grace; and equilibrium with justice is the energy we’ll be experiencing this week. Just remember that Swords are weapons of war, so if we establish a truce or peace this week, it will occur because of a threat of unpleasantness; even conflict or violence. And it will be temporary.

On the kabalistic Tree of Life, this card represents the formula 4: sephiroth or sphere 4, Chesed (meaning Mercy; sphere of Jupiter, the rule of Law) in the suit of Swords (Yetzirah, the world of Form; element of Air, representing the intellect and mental processes) plus Jupiter in Libra (more on that in a moment) equaling Truce.

The Fours of the Minor Arcana are where the form and structure of their respective elements and suits are stabilized and nurtured for further development and manifestation. They bring unification, domestication, reflection, or gestation to events and situations.

Astrologically this card symbolizes Jupiter in Libra, and rules from 20 to 30 degrees Libra, or October 13th to October 22nd, so if your birthday falls on or between these dates you’ll be feeling this week’s energy even more than the rest of us. Jupiter in Libra energy is great for socializing and increasing one’s popularity or public reputation. There is a strong sense of justice and fair play as well as a desire to promote the general welfare and public good.

In real-time astrology, Chiron turns retrograde in Fire-sign Aries (Libra’s polar opposite sign) on July 5th (through December 8th). This energy is good for introspection and we look within to find resolution and healing. Aries’ energy is not naturally inclined toward peaceful negotiation, but combined with the energy of this week’s card creates balance and harmony during this forecast period.

Venus (Libra’s ruling planet) enters earth-sign Virgo (one of Libra’s next-door-neighbor signs on the wheel of the zodiac) on July 9th. Love takes a practical yet still sensual turn with this transit. We seek to be of service to others, and we show our affection through small but important actions rather than large, extravagant displays.

On July 10th, Jupiter turns direct in Water-sign Scorpio (Libra’s other next-door-neighbor sign). We may see stalled relationships and projects begin to move forward and build momentum again. Our self-confidence and enthusiasm are on the rise.

Misuse, darkening or the shadow energy of this card includes isolation, retreat, illness (physical, mental or emotional), or making too many concessions and over-compromising, trying for peace at any price.

Let’s focus being tolerant, using a temporary break in the action to plan our next move, and seeking the outcome that offers the opportunity of achieving the best and highest good for all concerned.

A little home alchemy: Power colors this week include violet, purple and blue for Jupiter along with deep green and blue for Libra.

Sapphire, amethyst, diamond, lapis and opal worn as jewelry or carried as power stones will keep balanced fairness and justice at the forefront of our dealings this week.

Copper and tin are this week’s metals, which when combined create bronze. Bronze is both harder and less brittle than either of these metals alone – and is both useful and beautiful. In olden times, bronze was used to make weapons. You can make a tool, or a statue. Choose either – choose well.

Scent your home, bath and body with violet, white rose, heliotrope, cedar and honeysuckle to help keep you on an even keel this week – with stability, balance and fairness.

Foods prepared with clove, sage, poppy seeds, anise, cinnamon, mint, nutmeg or sage will provide the same beneficial effects.
