Welcome to Destiny Tarot! My name is Dona Murphy, and I have
been reading Tarot cards for over thirty years.
The Tarot is a powerful tool for both spiritual and practical
insights. I believe that the higher wisdom within each human
being is accessed during a Tarot reading, so the intuitive
counseling I offer will be the result of an interactive process
between you and me, with the cards as a guide.
What about fate? Destiny? Are we "the masters of our fates, the captains of our souls"? I certainly believe we are! The Tarot shows us the path we're on, and the probable outcome if we continue on that path. But we choose our paths through life, and we make our own destinies. So, doing a reading is like using a map on a journey - to plan your best course, to see your progress toward a goal or destination, and to get back on track if you become lost.
I'm here to help, and I would be honored to travel part of your journey with you...

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Tarot readings real?
As a tarot reader for over 30 years, my short answer is “yes”.
Forget what the media has shown you about the all-knowing, all-seeing,
fortuneteller predicting dire doom or rosy perfection. The reality
is that the tarot is a tool for connecting the reader and the questioner
in an interactive process that accesses higher wisdom to explore
possibilities and choices. Life does not come with a guarantee;
a tarot reading is no different. What all of us have is the present,
and the ability to choose our thoughts, feelings, intentions and
actions for the best possible outcome. Will we falter and make mistakes?
Of course we will, because we are human. A tarot reading can help
guide the questioner and help him/her connect to the intuition we
all possess and which serves us as an internal compass, if we are
willing to pay attention to it. Neither readings (nor readers) can
substitute for the life experience of a questioner, nor can the
reading or the reader “make” things happen.
Clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, claircognizance,
intuition, huh?
When I am reading tarot, any (and sometimes all) of these abilities
will assist me in answering questions. Not all abilities manifest
at all times, but whatever information comes through in any form
will be shared with the questioner.
Clairvoyance: the power or faculty of discerning objects not
present to the eye
Clairaudience: the power or faculty of hearing something not
present to the ear
Clairsentience: the power or faculty of having sensations, sense
perceptions, or feelings
Claircognizance: the power or faculty of having knowledge or
perception
Something we all possess, and which I encourage the questioner
to be aware of during tarot readings (and at other times too), is
the power of intuition.
Intuition: A direct knowledge or awareness of something without
conscious attention or reasoning, non-intellectual perception.
I am also an empath, which means I can feel the emotional states
of people with whom I am in direct contact (such as the questioner
in a tarot reading), and other people with whom I am not in direct
contact (such as those people whose lives interact with the questioner’s).
Is that really your picture?
Yes, and it has been recently updated.
Do you cast spells for your clients?
No. While there may be genuine spellworkers out there somewhere,
my feeling is that the practice is a much-used (and much-abused)
way of taking financial, emotional and spiritual advantage of vulnerable
people. I also feel that if someone is interested in doing spells
or rituals, the very best way to go about that is to learn to do
them for oneself.
Do you take notes on your clients or exchange information about
clients with other readers?
No. I could not possibly give a coherent tarot reading and be taking
notes at the same time – I just don’t multitask that
well. While I give readings, my right-brain and left-brain activities
are integrating on some level, but not to the extent that I could
write and do the reading simultaneously. As for exchanging information
about clients with other readers (or with ANYONE else for that matter),
I consider that a breach of confidentiality and, as you will see
in my Code of Ethics and Client Bill of Rights, I will never do
that unless I am compelled to by law or at the specific request
of the client.

How to Get the Most from Your Reading
One of the most important things you can do before getting a reading
is to properly frame your question. It is a way to focus and relax
so that you are open to the information you’ll receive and
to get the best information (answers) possible. Here are some guidelines
based on those found in “Learning the Tarot” by Joan
Bunning (Copyright 1995-2005). I have adapted them based on my experience
and what has proved useful to my clients. I can also help you to
frame your question without wasting your time and money, or asking
YOU a lot of questions.
1. Responsibility
Frame your question to show that you accept responsibility for your
situation. Tempting as it is to ask a question designed to tell
us what to do; we must accept that the tarot can’t make our
decisions for us. We all wish for a guarantee that we're making
good choices, but life (with or without a tarot reading), holds
no guarantees. Avoid questions that deflect responsibility, such
as:
• "Yes" or "No" Questions
• Questions beginning with "Should..."
• Questions asking only about time
Instead, try framing your questions beginning with:
• Can you give me insight into ...
• What do I need to understand about ...
• What is the meaning of ...
• What is the lesson or purpose of ...
• What are the circumstances underlying ...
• How can I improve my chances of ...
• How might I ...
2. Keeping Your Options Open
Frame your question to show that you are keeping your options open,
rather than those that indicate you have chosen a certain course
of action or made a decision ahead of time.
3. Level of Detail
There is often a fine line between wording that is too vague and
too detailed. While you can certainly ask the tarot for a “general”
reading, the answers you receive will also typically be “general”.
At the other end of the spectrum is the too-detailed question, “what
will happen between Joe and me on Tuesday June 25th at 2:00 p.m.?”
You may get a specific answer, but without context or some idea
of the circumstances surrounding the events, you will probably miss
the bigger picture.
4. Focusing On Yourself
When you get a reading, YOU are always the central character. Your
question should focus on you, your concerns and options. There are
times when questions about others are fine. However, while focusing
on another person’s problems, concerns or even behaviors may
give you some information and insight, beyond that it is not particularly
useful since you cannot make another’s choices or live another’s
life for him/her.
5. Staying Neutral
You want to stay as neutral as possible when framing your questions.
It is easy to go into a reading convinced that your position is
the right one, but if you truly want to receive guidance, you need
to be open to other points of view.
6. Being Positive
I am not Pollyanna, and I know that challenging circumstances, feeling
stuck, and seeking change for a less-than-perfect situation can
bring out the negativity in all of us. So, even if we don’t
feel “positive”, the question can be framed in a constructive
way – one that seeks a solution rather than emphasizing (and
reinforcing) the problem. Phrasing the question in a constructive
way indicates confidence that useful information will come through
in the answer.
Instead of asking:
• How come I never …?
• Why can't I …?
• Can you help me understand why I always (screw up, ruin,
blow it)…?
Try asking:
• How can I improve my ability to …?
• How can I locate, identify, position myself…?
• Can you help me find a way to (succeed, prosper, manifest) …?
Questions I Can Answer
• Career and Business Questions
• Education, Training, Skill-building Questions
• Love, Romance, Relationship Questions – current
partners, prospective partners, potential (for those currently
single/seeking)…
…and a special note on “exes”:
This should probably appear under FAQs, since it is definitely
a frequently asked question. I can and will answer questions
about your ex to the best of my ability, and I will share the
answers honestly with you. Many years of experience have taught
me that there is a reason exes are exes, whether the relationship
is ever rekindled or not.
Focusing on an ex is a way to keep from moving forward with
your own life. Focusing on whether or not he or she will ever
return is detrimental to your health, happiness and well-being,
and on some level, keeps you “waiting” – stagnating,
and postponing life in the present.
If a person is not “here and now”, and if a relationship
has ended (temporarily or permanently); I believe there is something
or someone for you to be meeting, doing, experiencing, and enjoying.
If the relationship was a mutually happy, functional, healthy,
loving one, it would not have broken up.
• Life Purpose, Spiritual Path, Growth and Healing
• Manifesting Abundance
Questions I will NOT Answer
• Pregnancy/Paternity Questions – these are medical
questions and am not a doctor or health care practitioner
• Legal Questions – I am not a lawyer and do not give
legal advice
• Gambling Numbers/Strategies, Lottery Numbers – illegal
in most states and illegal in my home state, enough said
• Definite/Guaranteed Timing and Outcome Questions –
no one can guarantee when something will definitely happen, or
even that it will definitely happen. Many factors affect both
present and future events, not the least of which are our own
thoughts, feelings, intentions and actions.
For me, timing in readings is shown as a window (or windows) of
opportunity. Overall, your reading will provide you with useful
information which I will share with you honestly, whether it’s
potentially positive or negative – your life and your choices
are yours alone.

Getting too many readings? Obsessed? Addicted?
Even a good thing can become harmful when it’s done to excess.
A reading can be beneficial, but it is a tool for finding solutions,
NOT a solution in itself. If you’re worried that you are getting
too many readings; or fear that you are becoming addicted to or
obsessed with readings, ask yourself:
1. Are you relying on readers and the information from readings
more than you rely on your own intuition, judgment and common
sense?
2. Are you being harmed financially by spending money you don’t
have or haven’t budgeted on readings?
3. Do you get several readings a day/week or are you calling
repeatedly over a short period of time to ask the same questions?
4. Do you plan your day and all of your decisions around the
information you receive from readings?
5. Do you find you’ve put your life “on hold”
waiting for predictions to occur?
6 Are you embarrassed, ashamed or secretive about getting readings?
7. Do you find that you feel only temporarily better, or even
worse, after receiving a reading than before you got it?
8. Are you more confused, anxious, stressed, fearful, or “down”
after receiving a reading(s), regardless of the information you
received?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, you may have
a problem but you’re not alone. There are many resources available
to you for kicking the habit. These are some of the websites that
can help you address the issue and put an end to self-destructive
behavior.
